Dr. Lavi’s Tip of the Week:

Write your Dream Legacy. This is your legacy to your family, friends, community, and the world.  Imagine a celebration in your honor being held at the end of your life.  You can have as many lifetime legacy dreams as you like.  It may help to think of the accomplishments in various categories: personal, spiritual, marital, family, social, community, vocational, hobbies, volunteer, educational and financial to name just a few to choose from.

Allow yourself to dream big, and don’t let your ‘inner critic’ eliminate any dream accomplishments, large or small.

Inspirational Story:  100-Year-Old Runner Proves It Is Never Too Late To Start A Dream Legacy
fauja-singh2     fauja-singh1
The Indian-Born British citizen Fauja Singh earned his way into The Guinness Book of World Records by completing the Toronto Marathon at age 100.  Although running 26 miles may seem like a daunting dream that would take a life-time of training to accomplish, Fauja didn’t even start running until he was 80-years-old!  He started slow and then worked his way up to running 10-miles per day in order to reach his dream of running a marathon by age 100.
He may not have been the first person across the finish line, but he wasn’t the last either.  Friends, family, and other supporters cheered him at the finish line after 8 hours and 11 minutes.
Today, at age 101, he has decided to retire from running.  Still, I have a feeling that even though his dream of running a marathon has been accomplished, he is never going to retire from chasing other dreams.

Questions for YOU:
What mark do you wish to leave behind for generations to come?
In your wildest dreams, what do you hope to have accomplished?
What do you hope others will say about you and your accomplishments?

Testimonials:

“Life is tough. It presents challenges all of the time. My first scary challenge that knocked me down was when I got Multiple Sclerosis in 1993. After addressing the physiological portion, many fears and irrational behavior developed. Because of Dr. Lavi, and my time as her patient, I was able to get back on track and enjoy my life despite knowing I would have MS the rest of my life and would need to work hard to manage and control it.

What Dr. Lavi didn’t know until now, is that she helped me again, when I faced stage-3 cancer years later. Her guidance and effective dream-planning ideas stayed with me all these years and helped me again through an even more frightening time of horrific cancer treatments. I would l not be who I am today without her help and guidance.” L.D. (former patient)

Dr. Lavi’s Tip of the Week:
Wake-Up Dreaming is not like the distant dreams and aspirations you had as a child.  Wake-Up Dreams encourage you to dream adult dreams (which could include some from childhood, if you still want to accomplish them), but allows you to “recalculate” them if they no longer fit your goals & to plan the path to reach them.
Inspirational Story:  Over the Rainbow Deep in the Heart of Texas By Dr. Barbara Lavi (taken from her blog)
I grew up in the middle of a suburban neighborhood in Houston, Texas. I have pictures of myself as a small child on a pony dressed up as a cowgirl in a photo taken by a photographer who would go house to house with the pony. Probably every child who grew up in Houston has a photo like that one. You cannot, however, grow up in Texas & not become proud to be a Texan. The history of 6 flags over Texas is rich & inspiring. I was not, however, a typical Texan. Growing up Jewish in Texas was not easy. In elementary school at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, my family was the only Jewish family. When I was in 6th grade my best friend, Cory Stiles, told me I had ruined Christmas for her in 1st grade when I told her that Santa Clauses in department stores were not really Santa Claus. I was a good student, won the school’s spelling bee contest, got lead parts in musicals, but also remember discriminatory remarks. During the year, I was different from all my classmates, I didn’t go to CCD or celebrate Christmas or Easter.
In the summers, I was lucky to have a place where my “Over the Rainbow” experiences happened. At the time my home away from home was at Camp Young Judaea in Kerrville, TX (or CYJ). At CYJ, I was able to learn to believe in myself, my heritage, & my ability to make a difference in the world. Every child should have a CYJ in their lives. I remember the excitement I felt every year from when I was 8 years old till I was 17 & came as a counselor to camp. When the bus arrived, I would run from building to building. It was as if I was making sure it was all still there waiting for the magic to occur inside the bunks, dining room, swimming pool & assembly hall. After running around, unpacking & settling in with a new bunk with old & new friends, I also remember sharing personal stories with bunk mates. It did not take long before there were tears, laughter & bonding. It was all right to share your worries from home & then just be yourself. I excelled at everything I did at camp & tried new things. I was a leader in ways I never allowed myself back home. Somehow, the counselors & friends brought out the best in all the kids at camp. I was not the only one who felt this way at camp, we all did. There was one song that has stuck with me throughout my life called “You and I Will Change the World.” We learned to respect differences, to fight for justice & to be proud that our Jewish heritage includes the responsibility to take social action.CYJ is now located deep in the heart of Texas, in Wimberley TX, & is celebrating its 60th Anniversary. Alumni are doctors, lawyers, musicians, film makers, psychologists, educators & are strong supporters of the camp that helped them believe in themselves & their dreams. When one of my friends (who I met at camp when we were 8 years old) & fellow psychologist, Amelia Samet Kornfeld, zl., lost her battle with brain cancer a little over a year ago, I asked her husband what charity he would like me to feature in & support with my book in her memory. When he suggested CYJ, I was thrilled to include my “Over the Rainbow” place that did so much to strengthen my dream potential. (To purchase the book & donate 1/2 of the proceeds to CYJclick here.)

Questions for YOU:
Did you have an “Over the Rainbow” place like CYJ as a child? Was it a camp, a drama club, or a chorus, like the one at PS 22? Did you have a teacher, coach or mentor who believed in you & helped you learn to believe in your dreams? Do you have one now?
Nonprofit in the Spotlight:
 Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundation3445 Zuni Street Denver, Colorado 80211Phone: (303) 832-8390

Fax: (303) 648-5821

Mission:  To raise money for disadvantaged children through annual fund-raising events and projects. Since it’s inception in 1987, Denver Active 20-30 has raised over $6 million. The foundation is dedicated to contributing to the betterment and welfare of children in the local community.
The Story: How Denver 20-30 Helped A Recovering Entrepreneur Reach His Dreams

Sometimes volunteering can help people find their passion leading them to their own dreams. As a successful, and very fortunate, entrepreneur, Billy Young had no intention of leaving his high paying corporate job. In 2000, he was looking to give back to the community by volunteering. He mentioned it to some of his colleagues.

One of his vendors at the time told him about a great local foundation, Denver Active 20-30, a non-profit service organization for business leaders between the ages of 20 and 39. Chartered under Active 20-30 International, the foundation members represent a diversity of professional backgrounds. Billy jumped at the chance to learn more. He felt it was the perfect place to start volunteering and giving back to his community.

His dream and life vision had always been to be a speaker, author, and trainer. Through the years he had talked about this dream to his wife, friends, and family members, but had never taken the steps to make it happen. At this point, hesitant to jump into the author/speaker world, he decided to join a start-up firm. It was a good, safe alternative to leaving the corporate world and a predictable pay check.. He became the interim CEO to help raise angel funds for a start-up company. Billy planned to be involved for six to nine months. After almost eighteen months Billy saw no end in sight. He decided he could no longer hide from or bury his dreams. He needed to write, create speeches and get in front of audiences. Billy needed to make an even bigger difference in the world of non-profit organizations.
He began writing two books that were part of his “How Good Become Great Series.” These books aimed at helping volunteer board members and nonprofit officers raise funds to reach their nonprofit visions. The majority of the book’s content was based on Billy’s work with the Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundation . His writing reflected the incredible impact the experience had on Billy’s life.
In his books, Billy presented how he helped The Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundatinon grow. The foundation now helps over fifty organizations each year through grants and key resources, contributing in many ways to the improvement of thousands of children’s lives in Colorado. In fact, the process Billy helped implement lead to a 400% increase in funds raised. While Billy worked at Denver Active 20-30 they were able to increase theiu donations to children’s charities from $350,000 to over $1 million per year. Billy finished his books in early 2010, and began offering speeches and training sessions free of charge. As he marketed and sold himself, new opportunities started to come his way.  In fact, during 2011, he has already completed over twenty trainings and garnered four consulting clients. Billy  is making a living as a professional speaker/trainer. His expectations are high, so he has a long way to go, but he is excited to get up each day. Thanks to his work as a volunteer with Denver Active 20-30 he now makes a difference while at the same time fulfilling his own dream.

Have a Happy Holiday Weekend! Upcoming Events:

CYJ TX
April 20 – 22nd Dr. Lavi will be traveling to Texas to support CYJ TX one of the nonprofits featured in the book at their 60th reunion. Scholar In Residence Menorah Park OH In August, Dr Lavi will the a scholar in residence at Menorah Park Senior Living Center in Ohio. More details coming soon.
Dr. Lavi’s Tip of the Week:
Support your dreams by adopting your own “inner dream parent.” Surround yourself with people who cheer you on when you’re struggling. Build a network of mentors, support groups, ministers, teachers, therapists, friends, etc. They should support your strengths, but also be able to give good constructive criticism — that encourages to keep moving towards your dreams!
Inspirational Story:  Thankfully, Stephen King’s Wife Was A “Dream Parent” for Him
stephenking  tabithaking
Stephen King may not have become the famous novelist we know today, if it weren’t for his wife. Like every writer, King struggled to get published the 1st time. In the very beginning, he could not even muster the courage to send his manuscripts to publishers. While working on his first novel, he became discouraged after a few pages. He threw the papers into the trash, deciding to give up.
Luckily for King & the rest of the literary world, his wife Tabitha retrieved the crumbled up pages from the trash. After smoothing out the creases & reading the manuscript, Tabitha found King & told him he had to finish the novel. She told him that she would help him with the difficult parts. Thanks to his wife’s encouragement & support, King finished Carrie, the 1st of his many best selling novels.
Questions for YOU: Who’s supporting your dreams? Who took things you may have thrown away & told you to keep working on it? Are you encouraging others in their dreams?
Are there people in your life bringing you down?

From the age of 8 years, two friends met at camp year after year. they went to the same High School & went on a Leadership Training program for young adults from around the world for a year after high school. one friend became a teacher 7 then a psychologist. The other also became a psychologist. Although they lived thousands of miles apart when they got together it was as if no time had passed. Sadly, one of those friends, Amelia Samet Kornfeld, lost a battle with Brain Cancer a year ago. Her friend, Dr. Barbara Lavi, chose to honor the Amelia Samet Kornfeld Memorial atCamp Young Judaea-Texas as one of the dream nonprofits included in The Wake Up And Dream Challenge. CYJ Texas acts as a “Dream Parent” to all the campers helping them to grow into leaders who reach for & attain their dreams. They strive to make children proud of who they are & of what they have to give to the world. Kids at camp are given a safe environment to try new things & do things they may not have attempted at home or in school. Social activism & social responsibility are part & parcel of the lessons children learn at camp. To honor Amelia’s memory, a jogging trail with outdoor exercise stations will not only keep Amelia’s dreams of physical fitness alive. It will also support the values of caring for others in body, mind & spirit which Amelia’s life exemplified as a psychologist, educator, social activist & philanthropist. Amelia was a true Dream Parent role model coming up with creative ways to teach & encourage children & clients. Her memory is a blessing to all who knew her & will live on at CYJ.
60 years ago, the national youth movement of Young Judaea established a regional summer camp in Texas, better known today as CYJ – Texas. The camp started operating in Center Point near Kerrville. Back then they did not own the facility, but rented it from Camp Christian. In the first years, camp consisted of only one session. There were about 200 campers. Many of them are the parents – & grandparents – of their present campers! The current location in Wimberley, Texas, purchased in 1970. Since then, they have built & enhanced their current facility, which they own & operate. This camp has 11 beautiful cabins & many state-of-the art facilities including a beautiful pool with two water slides. They currently can accommodate over 600 campers per summer! Dr. Lavi is looking forward to attending the 60 year reunion & sharing the book with old friends & new generations of campers who are still learning that they too can “change the world!”

More details coming soon. Dr. Lavi’s Tip of the Week:

Don’t be afraid to change your dreams.  Gradual changes can lead you to your ultimate goals.Your Dream Positioning System can help you shift your dreams gradually. If you change directions slightly, your DPS will automatically “recalculate”& help move you towards your dreams which may change a bit on the way. Inspirational Story: Andrea Bocelli: From Lawyer to Singer andreabocelli2

Andrea Bocelli, the famous Italian singer who has been dubbed the “fourth tenor” and the “leading Tower of Pisa”, has not always been working toward his music career.  He studied law at the University of Pisa and continued to work as a lawyer for a year after graduating.  However, throughout college, he never gave up on his dream job of becoming a singer.  On weekends, he sang professionally at piano bars and used the money he earned to finance his singing lessons. In 1992, a year after receiving his degree from the University of Pisa, Andrea Bocelli stepped in the professional music world to record “Miserere” with Zucchero Fornaciari.  Two years later, he won his first prize at the San Remo Music Festival, launching his amazing music career. Andrea Bocelli made a big career change to follow his dream of becoming a famous singer, but he made this change gradually while supporting himself and studying other interests.  In the end, Bocelli knew that he had to give up working as a lawyer to devote his time to music: “I came to believe that if you have a gift, you have an obligation to share it with others. It’s as simple as that.” Questions for YOU:  Are you satisfied with your current job? Do you have any hobbies or skills sitting on the backburner? What other areas of life would you like to explore or take a class in to learn more about? Is an illness or disability holding you back? Nonprofit in the Spotlight

The Blind Judo Foundation Phone: Coach Willy Cahill, Co-Founder at 650-589-0724 Phone: Ron C. Peck, Co-Founder at 425-444-8256 info@blindjudofoundation.org

The Blind Judo Foundation was founded by the odd pair of Coach Willy Cahill, a lifetime dedicated teacher of Judo and Martial Arts, and Ronald C. Peck, the Executive Director of the Neurological Disease Foundation.  Together, they used their skills and their common dream to help people to promote the sport of Judo to the blind and visually impaired community.  This foundation provides professional development activities, information, and educational resources for coaches on how to work with visually impaired students.  The main goal of this foundation is to teach the community how beneficial Judo can be for all walks of people and to provide funding to deserving students for sustained training and memberships to USA Judo and USABA.

Ronald C. Peck claims that the sport of Judo is important to the blind community, as well as all people, because it builds confidence, character, and teaches students how to make long-lasting commitments.  He also believes that Judo teaches humility, respect, and responsibility.

Dr. Lavi’s Tip of the Week:

Take time every day for yourself & your dreams & you will keep moving forward towards them. Even an hour a day can move you towards your dreams.“I am a full time student and an intern for Dr. Barbara Lavi, but I still find time each day to follow my dream of writing a novel.  Even when I can’t work on my book, I write down observations, conversations, and ideas. “Since January, I have written two essays, created a website to keep track of my writing experience, and kept a log in my computer of all my observations and ideas.  I am following my dream to become a writer one step at a time, making sure to practice the craft of writing every day.”
                                                                              – Melissa ToniInspirational Story:From Homeless to Artist One Line at a Timesirshadow4
Sir Shadow is one of those amazing people who never let any obstacles tear down his dreams.  He dropped out of high school, could not afford to go to art school, & lived on the streets of New York City as a homeless man.  Still, he persevered & never let go of his dream of becoming an artist.

Shadow continued to draw & sell his paintings on the streets.  People started to recognize him & call him the “Master of the Flow” & the “One-Line Artist”, because of the amazing ability he has to produce beautiful drawings with one continuous line.  Today, his artwork can be found in major art venues & in homes around the country.  Whitney Houston was one of his biggest fans.

He has come a long way, but he will never forget the hardships he has endured.  “I create before the pain slips away,” he writes in his poem entitled Stay Strong, “knowing that life makes art out of upsets and tragedies.”
